Annapolis has become one of our favorite cities due its history, character and buzzzz of all things sailing. If you're into sailing and want to start networking, attend the show in October. As the largest in-water sailboat show, there are so many boats to explore and it's a great place to compare sailboat sizes and brands. Checking out boating equipment and meeting other product vendors is also advantageous. And oh, don't forget about Pusser's Painkillers -- they're not to be missed!
We subscribe to several sailing YouTube channels and are also patrons for a few (which means we contribute $ to them for publishing videos through Patreon). There is always a variety of sailing content to keep us entertained. In addition, we learn about a wide range of information relating to living life on a sail boat at sea and on anchor. Patron social gatherings are so much fun and a great way to meet YouTube personalities as well as other people interested in a similar type of lifestyle.
The standard USA sailing classes were on our checklist as ASA 101,103,104 and 114. In addition to ASA, we started to attend Cruiser's University classes in Annapolis, MD in both the Spring and Fall seasons. Cruiser's University classes are in-person with a wide variety of topics geared to help you learn more about living life on a sailboat from engines to survival skills. We've learned, the more involved you become in the sailing community, the more learning opportunities you'll have.
Instagram and Facebook are platforms which allow us to follow our favorite sailors and join specific boat and sailing groups where there is such a wide range of topics to engage with. These platforms are great place to learn, share and teach. We actively comment or send messages to inquire about certain topics as we prepare for our own sailing adventure. The sailing community is amazing.
Ok, so we haven't officially joined a sailing club, but we have toured and inquired about membership. A club an hour from our home offers crew opportunities for racing and pleasure sailing even if you're not a member. Wisconsin has such a short sailing season, timing hasn't worked for us. We do continue to stay connected with the sailing club and network during open houses & public events.
We belong to ASA and continue our membership. In addition, Chris became a member of the Salty Dawg Sailing Association to participate in the Crew Service benefit where owners of boats are matched with crew and vice versa. It cost a small fee and was well worth it. Chris gained miles of offshore experience by completing two Salty Dawg sailing rallies and we both gained new life-long friendships.
